The Origins of Poi Spinning

A poi is a ball on a cord. Poi are moved in circular patterns to create a state of “flow” and a sense of rhythm, fluidity, and self-expression.

Poi spinning is a traditional performance art form originating from the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand and holds cultural significance within Māori communities. It was traditionally used as a form of warrior training by Māori warriors to improve coordination, timing, and weapon skills. Poi spinning helped warriors develop agility and hand-eye coordination necessary for combat. Poi spinning was also used by Māori women to maintain flexibility and dexterity in their hands and arms.

The Flow Arts

Today, poi spinning has evolved into a diverse and vibrant art form practiced by people around the world. It falls under the niche of “Flow Arts”. Flow artists often perform at events like festivals, gatherings, or even in street performances, showcasing their unique styles and skills.

Types of modern poi include sock poi, practice poi, contact poi, LED poi (see video above) and fire poi.

Poi Spinning for Wellness

IMPROVED FITNESS

Spinning poi involves continuous movement of the arms, shoulders, and upper body, providing a moderate to intense workout depending on the intensity and duration of the activity. It can help improve cardiovascular health, muscle tone, flexibility, and endurance.

COORDINATION AND MOTOR SKILLS

Practicing poi spinning requires hand-eye coordination, timing, and spatial awareness. Over time, this can enhance fine motor skills and overall coordination, which can be beneficial in various daily activities.

BALANCE AND PROPRIOCEPTION

Many poi spinning techniques involve maintaining balance and control over the body while manipulating the poi. This can improve proprioception (awareness of body position) and balance skills, leading to better stability and reduced risk of falls.

STRESS RELIEF AND MENTAL HEALTH

Engaging in flow arts like spinning poi can promote relaxation and stress relief by allowing practitioners to enter a state of flow, where they are fully immersed in the present moment and focused on the activity. This can have a calming effect on the mind and help alleviate anxiety and tension.

Beyond entertainment, spinning poi can also be a form of meditation or a way to achieve mindfulness through movement. Poi spinning offers multiple health benefits, both physical and mental. It can be performed by all ages and adapted to all abilities.

CREATIVITY AND SELF-EXPRESSION

Poi spinning is a creative form of expression that allows practitioners to develop their unique style and repertoire of moves. Engaging in creative activities has been linked to improved mood, self-esteem, and overall psychological well-being.

MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION

Flow arts, including poi spinning, can serve as a form of moving meditation, where practitioners cultivate mindfulness by tuning into their breath, body sensations, and the rhythmic motion of the poi. This can promote relaxation, mental clarity, and emotional balance.

SOCIAL CONNECTION

Participating in the flow arts community, whether online or in-person, provides opportunities for social interaction, collaboration, and shared experiences. Building connections with others who share a passion for poi spinning can contribute to a sense of belonging and support.
